I agree completely with what you are saying, but I came to that conclusion about a two/three years ago, when I started playing jazz music. The number of people that think jazz is pointless is staggering. It's just ridiculous how much so many people frown upon anything new or different these days. The sad part is, there's nothing anyone can do to change it. People will be people, and if you play something the masses don't enjoy, you probably won't get famous. But judging by your words and feelings, I don't think that is your goal in the first place. I suppose all that you and all other people who appreciate the music of the minority can do is simply play what you like and enjoy it for what it is. The majority of people will always latch on to something remotely catchy, and not take time out of their busy lives to sit down and analyze the inner beauty of many genres of music.
